| The inlet of the Trout River was merely a narrow stream and would have extended over 100 yards into the lake at modern levels. |

The outlet of the Trout River from Alder Lake was a narrow stream as well but the modern outlet is close to pre-dam levels. Just down the river a 1/4 mile a railroad crossed this channel from the Powell, Wisconsin spur that went to Little Star Lake.

The channel exiting Alder Lake was part of a canal system created in the early 20th century by a railroad owner named Southgate. This canal had wooden locks and linked the Lac Du Flambeau Chain of lakes with the Manitowish Waters Chain of lakes. The canals were reportedly dug by hand and used boats with transoms on each end, so rather that turning around in the canal the motor would be moved to change direction. The canals can be seen on modern USGS maps and connected landlocked lakes like Ike Walton as well. Few residents realize that Alder and Little Trout Lakes had two dance halls, a saw mill and large areas of development during the early 20th century.
