A scholarship is money awarded on the basis of grades, other achievements, or special conditions. Financial need is sometimes a consideration. The person or organization giving the money determines the criteria for choosing the recipient. The money is usually given to the college in which the student enrolls. It is sometimes given in two parts, equally divided between first and second semesters.

Scholarship opportunities are available from many sources.  National scholarships can be found using the links on our Resource Links webpage.  The MHS counseling office lists all local and regional scholarships of which it is made aware on this website under List of Scholarships 2008-09.  Whenever the listings are updated, an announcement is made using the daily PA announcement system.  Students must pay attention to the requirements and deadlines for each scholarship.

Sometimes scholarship opportunities come to the counseling office with such short notice that is is necessary to use the morning and afternoon PA announcements to advertise them. The daily announcements are posted outside of the main office. If a student is absent, he/she may review the previous day's announcements in the counseling office.

Students should also research scholarships through Internet resources, and through work sites, churches, and extracurricular activities to which they or their parents belong. Books are also available with listings of scholarships offered on a national basis.

Some scholarships require that a transcript be sent along with the application. If an "official" transcript is required, the student should request it from the Docufide electronic transcript website.  If the transcript can be "unofficial", the student can request it in the guidance office. Either way, a transcript release form must be on file, signed by the student if he or she is over eighteen and by the parent or guardian if the student is not yet  eighteen.  See separate listing titled "Transcripts" for further information and a copy of the transcript release form.
